Finding Balance and Taking Breaks
Finding balance between work, personal needs, and family or relationship expectations can make you a more productive student.
Graduate students often feel that the more time and effort they put into their academic work, the more they can accomplish. This may be true to a certain extent, but when a high level of stress is carried for a long period of time, it can actually decrease your productivity and quality of life.
Balance comes in many forms. Many students are able to stay balanced by having a “positive” distraction - a hobby, a sport or something that complements your professional interests like being part of a student organization such as GPSA. Finding balance will help you develop other skills beyond your academic focus which may be useful when looking for a job.
- Cornell’s Caring Community includes many resources to help keep your perspective and find balance. Finding balance may mean becoming involved with family activities or groups around town.
- Cornell’s Notice and Respond Program includes information about your role as a member of the Cornell community and how to help others find balance.
Successful graduate students take time out to relax, visit with friends, and enjoy the many offerings of the greater Cornell community.
